National Geographic is among the latest magazines to ride the green wave with a new special interest issue: The Green Guide. Among articles that debate the merits of plastic bags vs. waxed paper for optimal sandwich carrying or suggestions for safer alternatives to bleach, writer Paul McRandle shares how to install a ceiling fan.

The benefits of fans are plenty--not only do they make an attractive design statement in place of a standard light fixture, but keeping a ceiling fan on during the spring and summer months can substantially lower an air conditioning bill. According to McRandle, fans use a tenth of the energy needed to power an air conditioner, and can "help rooms feel up to ten degrees cooler." Check out the Spring 2008 issue of The Green Guide for complete installation instructions.
