Affordable Housing Design Competition Yields 25 Designs That Are Easy On The Eyes & The Pocket
We just got word that the Southern California chapter of Habitat for Humanity has hosted with the the Insitute of Classical Architecture, a design competition and the winners are going to be announced on July 16th at the West Hollywood Waterworks store.
Architects, interior designers & landscapers from all over the country took to their drawing pads and have submitted their designs for a single family home that is sustainable, reflective of Southern California's rich architectural history, easily built and most importantly - affordable. The winning designs are scheduled to be published in a guidebook for use by Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Southern California, so look for these homes to jump off the pages and take to the streets.
The goal is to bring design and architecture principles to affordable housing. There is a stigma attached to affordable houses - that they look like "affordable housing" - so communities - especially historic communities - are not so keen to accept them. The competition asked that architects design affordable houses that stylistically fit a Southern California design aesthetic - on a Habitat budget.
