Are Modular Mansions Really Green?

At one point, there was hope that the modular home craze would catch on. But most new buildings, like the modulars, have suffered since the crash of the housing market.

According to the Washington Post, a new demand for them has come up. People are looking to build new modular homes - just a whole lot bigger.

The appeal is obvious. In less than two days, future homeowners can have a multi-bedroom and multi-bath home with a low cost. They've got all the bells and whistles of a green home, but ironically, building a bigger home than is necessary is environmentally unfriendly, whichever way you slice it.

Grist reported that in Berkeley, where a software mogul is building a 10,000-square-foot mansion that is classified as green by the city's standards; they measure things like water use and building materials for the designation, not size.

What do you think about this potential trend in green building? Eco-friendly or an eco-no-no?

If you're smart, you can consume less energy in that home than most families do in much smaller homes.

  • This is definitely a nice idea.

  • It totally has to be an eco no-no. When you have a humongous house, there's no way you're going to go allllll the way back to the bedroom or bathroom (for what seemingly seems forever away) to turn off the light before you go out to dinner and whatnot. Even though people are trying to be greener nowadays, there are some situations where green just won't win.
