Osprey Eco-Cottage from Nationwide Homes at 2010 Builders' Show

osprey-house1.jpg

We were tipped by Apartment Therapy that the Osprey Eco-Cottage had been setup at the 2010 Builders' Show this week and that we made to check it.

"Sized at just 523 square feet, The Osprey was designed as a secondary or vacation home, complete with a bedroom, bathroom, sizable deck, galley-style kitchen, and full bathroom."

"This is an NAHB's National Green Building Gold certified structure which integrates energy saving measures such as Energy Star appliances, Low E SmartSun Glass windows, tankless water heaters, recycled wood, low or no VOC paints, formaldehyde free insulation and the option for Thin-Film Solar technology integrated into the the roofing panels for off the grid use."

It was cold and wet outside so that forced a lot of people into the home which at 523 sqft was small already but also gave us an opportunity to view the home in the real-world as if you were hosting a party of 30 people.

Surprisingly the Osprey held up. One of the greatest features was it's use of outdoor space as the decks provided a nice overflow from the front and back rooms. The side window near the front was large enough that people outside didn't feel cut-off from those inside.

The reverse arch on the interior ceiling was beautiful and reflected the "winged" overhang in the front and back of the house that we suspect helped in the naming of the house.

The kitchen was a straight galley kitchen and hearkened back to some of the NYC apartments we've seen although none were as well appointed as this kitchen was.

Such a small space has much lower energy demands which coupled with energy-star appliances will save the homeowner a lot of coin.

The bedroom was left unfinished intentionally to showcase sponsor supplied building materials. Dispolays for Generac Total House Protection systems, BASF/Honeywell Foam insulation, Moen spa shower, Tankless WH and BOSE and Crestron audio and structured wiring had behind the wall displays showing off the product.

The roof and V ceiling is something in the Osprey. After all, usually in a dwelling, sitting against a wall, you look up and see higher space in the middle of the room.

In the Clayton i-house, the V of the butterfly roof, runs laterally, instead of longitudinally, so the nadir of the V is only in the hallway and in the second bedroom of the 2-bedroom core model. Still, when I first saw it in the bedroom, I stared at it for several seconds thinking how odd it looked, but by the second visit, I didn't think anything of it.

However, in the rest of the i-house, the V shape creates a nice effect of opening the spaces up toward each end of the house where there are decks. So, in the Osprey, it would open views up to the outside, on the sides.

As far as the exterior bird-in-flight appearance of the Osprey, I thought it was beautiful the first time I saw a rendering of it, and the photos look even better. Looks much nicer than the Osprey helicopter, which cost 27 billion to develop.

Great photos. Thanks. Beautiful little house. No shot of the bedroom?

  • The bedroom was left bare and packed with people and oddly some painting supplies. It's almost as if they rushed to get the front of the house done and skimped on decorating the back bedroom. The photos are took were peoples heads. If I had a bigger lense I may have been able to get a better view, great looking house.

Ah ha! That explains it. The Nationwide Custom Homes website links to two Picasa photo albums which include over 200 photos of the Osprey, (some nice construction photos) and none of them show the bedroom or the bathroom, so I'm really glad you got such great shots of the bathroom, at least. And your other shots are nice too.

On my blog post about the Osprey as a challenger to the Clayton i-house, I link to your post here, because so far, they are the best interior photos of the home.

I wonder what the show Osprey sold for? It was loaded with Gaggenau appliances, I read, that would not come on a more standard $60,000 model. (One blogger in Vegas said that would be the base price.) The thin film solar roof is a $7500 upgrade.

I'm not too crazy about all the dangling things (LEDs over the kitchen sink, ceiling fans, box lights) because I think they detract from the ceiling line and interior space but that's minor stuff. I'd like to see all their eco-homes go into production though, as I think they are very cute, and from the production photos, you can tell quite well made.

If your readers want easy links to all the photos and new information about the Osprey, I keep revising my post on it, and adding links to people's blogs as they come in.

  • Great compilation of links. I haven't heard what the sale price was. Love the ceiling line! I immediately noticed it in the front room. The kitchen and bath seemed top notch in regards to the appliances and construction.
