Do One Thing And Save On Your Energy Bill

As rising energy costs continue to put strain on homeowner budgets (especially as we head into cooler months), saving energy is not only a great idea for the planet -- it will help you save money, too.

Luckily, saving energy is a lot easier than it sounds. In fact, there's one thing you can do that just may make a noticeable difference in your electricity bill.

Before you go to sleep, turn off your computer. Don't leave it in sleep or hibernate mode -- instead, completely power down your machine.

You may have heard that frequently turning your computer on and off might harm your machine, or use more energy. Yet the U.S. Department of Energy says the small amount of energy exuded when your computer starts up "is still less than the energy used when a computer is running for long periods of time."

And if you want energy-saving bonus points, turn off your power strip when your computer is off, which will help prevent the power strip from drawing phantom power -- and boost your energy savings.

If you have any other quick energy-saving tips that will make an impact on your energy bills, we'd love to hear them!

  • good blog really and good sharing

  • The common thinking is that shutting down and hibernate/sleep mode are just the same. Though a computer on hibernate/sleep mode consumes less power, it still consumes power even though you're not using it. The contention is that the computer boots faster when coming from hibernate mode, but the same can be said when it's coming from a complete shutdown.

  • Don't leave it in sleep or hibernate mode -- instead, completely power down your machine.

  • Yes it is indeed true. In order to save energy you need not only turn off the appliances you're not using but removing the plug as well because it also consumes energy.

thanks a lot for sharing me this...

  • Now the D.O.E. is telling us to turn it off which is a good idea. However, I am using the web several times and I will disconnect from the web, but not the power. I would be turning it on 10 or more times a day. I'm a busy homeowner and have an online business. So for me and my computer I guess it will stay on until bedtime.
