We came across a couple of impressive home security systems at the 2010 Builders’ Show and as a complete system the LiNK from Schlage is packed with some impressive features. This home security system can also manage your heating and air conditioning as Schlage has teamed with Trane Alarm.com.
LiNK is actually two products in one. A home setup with LiNK controlled devices can be controlled via a remote computer or mobile device. A guest loses their key – you can open the door remotely. Your kids ditch school and come home during the day – you’ll know via text that they opened the front door. Forgot to turn off the A/C or want to leave lights on while you are away, again you can do this from any internet enabled device.
Alarm.com adds another layer to this system by introducing a wireless keypad deadbolt that you can lock or unlock as well as the ability to monitor security cameras from any computer or mobile phone. With your phone you can watch live streaming video and recorded clips as well as search an event history.
This system is completely wireless and doesn’t require a phone line which can be disarmed by cutting the line.
You can get started on this system for $300, which includes the bridge device, which connects via Ethernet to a router; 1 wireless dead-bolt or lever lock; and a light module for lamps, which acts as a repeater for the wireless signal.
Options include a wireless camera ($180 each), additional locks ($200 each), light modules ($50 each), Trane setback thermostats ($150 each).
Monthly access to the Schlage LiNK is $13.
