How To Prep Cabinets For Painting

We’ll be honest with you. Painting cabinets is a pretty serious undertaking. If you’re in the market to update your kitchen but don’t want to invest in new cabinets, painting them (and swapping out hardware) is the easiest way to give your kitchen a complete facelift.
Before you go to town with your paint brush, you’ll want to make sure your cabinets are properly prepped. Remove the cabinet doors, and also take off any hinges and handles so that you don’t accidentally cover them with paint.
One of the most important things you can do to prep the cabinets? Give them a good cleaning with a degreaser. Even if you think they’re clean, the cabinets are likely to be covered with a light build-up of dust, fingerprints and other residue. The clean surface will be easier to sand, prime and paint, and you’ll be much happier with the results.

Once your cabinets are clean, lightly sand them and then cover with an oil-based primer. Apply your paint, and be sure to seal the paint once it’s dry. This will add a protective covering to the cabinets that will help extend the life of the paint job.
Allow to dry thoroughly in between coats, and when ready, re-mount the cabinet doors and attach the hardware. Then grab a cold beverage, sit back, and admire your handiwork.
Have you painted your kitchen cabinets? How’d it go?
