As you very well may already know, April 22nd is Earth Day, and this year more companies than ever are joining in the effort to help green our planet.
One of the most interesting concepts we’ve seen is the partnership between Old Navy and TerraCycle. TerraCycle is a program based out of New Jersey that offers incentives to recycle objects your local recycling program may not accept and turn them into an array of useful products. And of course, Old Navy is a purveyor of inexpensive clothing and accessories (including the largest selection of flip flops known to man) owned by parent company Gap, Inc. This partnership takes both companies’ strong points and combines them into a way to bring happiness and cheer to kids nationwide.
Starting on Earth Day and going until May 21st, you can drop off last year’s flip flops at participating Old Navy stores, which in turn will be sent to TerraCycle to help build one of four playgrounds across the country. How awesome is that?
At each Old Navy store there should be a big blue receptacle for you to drop your old, broken, outgrown, worn out, or otherwise no longer desirable flip flops off to send to TerraCylce. And of course, while you’re there you could probably catch a steal on new pairs for the whole family.
We think this is an ingenious idea to keep a very popular, yet often short-lived product out of landfills and reused for an amazing purpose.
