The new year is nearly upon us, and that means trend forecasts are being released on an almost daily basis. If you’re planning to update your kitchen in 2011, you may want to consider some of these current trends that will add style and functionality to your space.
+ Integrate living space. Because the kitchen often serves as a home’s command center, more and more homeowners are creating larger kitchens with more living space (think built-in banquettes, large islands and seating areas, etc.) or even adopting an open floor plan that allows the kitchen and living room to seamlessly flow together.
+ Custom countertops. This is one of the most popular ways to change the look (and functionality) of your kitchen. Although counters are available in a number of materials, experts predict that stone countertops will remain popular. Granite can be cost-prohibitive to those DIYers on a budget, but manufacturers are releasing more stone varieties that are affordable, including travertine and other natural stone.

+ New color, new aesthetic. Although 2010 saw a prevalence of white kitchens, warmer colors are expected to dominate in 2011. Experts point to the rustic, welcoming palette of a farmer’s market as a source of inspiration, as well as a sign that homeowners are increasingly interested in connecting to the land around them and buying locally. Color can be used throughout the kitchen–think painted walls, cabinets and even brightly hued appliances, which are becoming more popular.
When remodeling your home, do you stick to trend forecasts or do you prefer to be inspired by your own style and preferences?
