What The Heck Is Rurbalization?

You may have heard this term before. It’s also been called “the new urbanism” or “agrarian urbanism”. The idea is that city neighborhoods could be built and restructured in order to be self-sustainable, a harmonious blend of urban and rural.
Daniel Nairn wrote a compelling article about the concept over at Grist, along with sketches of how this concept could come to life. Based on a standard 340-by-340 foot block, Nairn’s sketch shows homes on the outer ridge of a block with a community garden and communal elements in the center.

Elements of his designs showcase a greenhouse, car sharing and a playground with fruit trees. Sounds pretty idyllic to me, but do you think this trend would actually take off in an urban area?
